When the famous fictional crime-solver known as Sherlock Holmes was first introduced in 1887 by author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, he was described thusly, “[his] very person and appearance were such as to strike the attention of the most casual observer. In height he was rather over six feet, and so excessively lean that he seemed to be considerably taller. His eyes were sharp and piercing, save during those intervals of torpor to which I have alluded; and his thin, hawk-like nose gave his whole expression an air of alertness and decision. His chin, too, had the prominence and squareness which mark the man of determination. His hands were invariably blotted with ink and stained with chemicals.”   A London-based “consulting detective” whose abilities border on the unreal, Sherlock Holmes is known for his astute elementary reasoning, his ability to melt into almost any disguise, and his pioneering use of forensic science to solve cases.   We all know about Sherlock Holmes’s most visible accessories – his Deerstalker hat, and his precious pipe. But what kind of wallet would the super-sleuth slip into his pants pocket?   We did some sleuthing ourselves and asked some clever deducers their opinion.   Wendy Kendall, who truly has a passion for purses, also knows a thing or two about wallets. She is sure Sherlock’s pocketbook would “Definitely [be] a hounds-tooth Burberry wallet that's custom made.  Inside is a stash of tobacco, just enough for one spontaneous pipe, and spot to slide in a smart phone so he can record his genius revelations on the go.”   An enterprising reporter from HARO said, “Sherlock Holmes' would own the Attacoa Performance Wallet. As an extremely rational man, he would want a wallet that can be utilized as a tool. These wallets are light, durable, and resistant to scanning devices. They offer the highest protection for valuable documents that may be contained inside and comes equipped with all the necessities a detective would bring: ink pen, compass, tooth pick, glass breaker, tweezers, reflector, self-defense striking edge, and hidden compartments to hide spare keys or clues to a case. In his wallet he'd have clues to cases such as hair follicles, marked napkins, and hidden messages and cash.”   There’s a wallet so slim and small, it’s called the PortaPocket. Kendra Kroll says, “It is an excellent way to discreetly and hands-free carry what you need, no matter what your outfit. It can carry anything from IDs, and lock picks (for those spies out there), to passports, larger smart phones, and more.”   Those are all well and good, but I have a feeling Sherlock Holmes’s wallet would be plain and discrete on the outside, blending in with every other wallet… but it’s really just a disguise. He’d have plenty of pockets inside to hide and protect all his best clues, and of course a good-sized billfold area for hiring Hansom Cabs and bribing informants.   For Sherlock, we’d suggest our Maven wallet in classic black.
